Capuchin Monkeys

The main troop of Capuchin monkeys are now living in their new home at Mogo Zoo in southern NSW, Australia. www.mogozoo.com.au

Our heartfelt thanks to Sally and Mogo Zoo for providing such a wonderful new home for these 12 amazing monkeys.

We thank Freight Lines NZ for donating the transportation of travel crates from other zoos around NZ and also many thanks to Mainfreight NZ and Tasman Cargo for donating their transport to the airport and flight to Australia.

Originating from the rainforests of Northern and Central South America, these monkeys are very intelligent and great fun to watch. An example of the intelligence these amazing monkeys in the wild is their ability to solve problems. Scientists have observed capuchins seeking out a particular species of millipede. The monkey rubs the millipede all over its fur and then passes it on to another monkey who do the same, analysis of the millipede secretions show they are loaded with benzoquinones which are potent insect repellants. If you come and watch our troop you will see them at play and often using tools to get treats from enrichment and toys.
